Global investing

Isn’t India the fastest-growing major economy?
It is, and we expect most of our clients’ wealth to stay in India. But economic growth and stock returns are not the same thing, and no market wins every decade.
Isn’t the US market expensive right now?
Valuations matter, which is why we never put everything in one market or invest in one go.
What if the rupee strengthens?
It can, and in some years it has. That’s why we size global allocation to your goals rather than betting on the currency.
Why not a US fund through an Indian mutual fund?
Indian mutual funds have faced industry-wide limits on overseas investment, and some have paused new money. Investing directly opens the full range of global funds, often at lower cost. More →

I’m an NRI. Can I work with you?
Not yet. We currently serve resident Indians investing under LRS.
Is my money safe at Interactive Brokers?

What will my portfolio hold?
Mostly low-cost global index funds, chosen for your goals, usually Irish-domiciled to avoid US estate tax. Why domicile matters →
Can my spouse and I invest together?
Yes. Each of you has your own $250,000 LRS limit and ₹10 lakh TCS threshold. We plan the two accounts as one family portfolio.

Rules and tax

Is investing abroad legal for Indians?
Yes. The RBI permits resident individuals to remit up to $250,000 a year for overseas investment under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme.
How much TCS is charged on foreign investment?
20% on remittances above ₹10 lakh in a financial year. It is an advance tax you adjust when you file your return.
Will I pay tax twice?
Generally not. US tax withheld on dividends is credited in India under the tax treaty, and capital gains are taxed in India.
Is there US estate tax for Indian investors?
Yes. Non-US persons with more than $60,000 in US-located assets can face US estate tax.
Who files my taxes?
Your CA does. We give you an annual summary that makes it straightforward.
How are gains on US shares taxed?
Held more than 24 months: 12.5% without indexation. Held less: at your slab rate. The ₹1.25 lakh exemption doesn’t apply. Full guide →
Can I trade options or use margin?
Not under LRS. Remitting money for margin or margin calls is prohibited, so we build cash portfolios only.
What if I don’t invest the money I send?
Money sent under LRS and left uninvested should be invested or brought back within 180 days.
Can I invest for my children?

Is GIFT City a better route?
It is growing, but the range and liquidity are still limited, and it still uses LRS. How they compare →
